The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities has convened its 14th meeting at the NIHR’s headquarters in the Seef District under the chairpersonship of Mrs. Deena AL-Ladhi, in the presence of Mr. Daniel Cohen.
At the beginning of the meeting, the Committee commended the royal directives issued by His Majesty the King to issue a supreme pardon for one hundred and seven convicts on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha, and the application of the provisions of the Law on Alternative Sanctions to forty-nine convicts in various cases.
The Committee also continued the discussions on field visits, which are scheduled to be conducted by it with a number of members of the NIHR Council of Commissioners to correction and rehabilitation centres during the upcoming Ashura season 1444 in order to determine the extent to which inmates enjoy the freedom to practice their religious rites.
The Committee stated the importance that all inmates should enjoy their basic rights, including the right to practice religious rites in a comfortable manner without harming or infringing the freedom and privacy of other inmates of all religions and other sects, and in a manner that ensures the preservation of the security of the centre and the safety and health of its inmates in accordance with the laws, regulations and systems applicable in the correction and rehabilitation centres as well as the relevant international human rights standards.
