NIHR’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities Convenes its Meeting

21 May 2024

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Visiting Detention Places and Facilities has convened its regular meeting, under the chairpersonship of D. Malallah J. Al-Hammadi, and membership of Mrs. Hala Ramzi Fayez, and Dr. Hooria Hassan.

At the outset of the meeting, the committee assessed the protocols pertaining to various field visits, both scheduled and unscheduled, which were recently conducted at the Correction and Rehabilitation Center in Jau and the Youngsters Center in Dry Dock. The objective of these visits was to address the complaints from the inmates' relatives, confirm the safeguarding of all their rights, and evaluate the measures implemented in response to the visit-specific recommendations, with the committee taking suitable actions accordingly.

Furthermore, the committee examined its reports from visits to multiple detention centers across different directorates and police stations, ensuring that detainees' rights as defined by law are being respected. Additionally, the committee looked over the report from their latest visit to the Metrook Guidance and Rehabilitation Center, including its recommendations and the steps taken to enforce them.

In the course of the meeting, the committee approved a plan for its upcoming field visit agenda for the remainder of the year, which will cover a variety of health and educational care facilities, encompassing both public and private schools. This plan is in alignment with the committee's responsibilities as prescribed by the founding law of the institution.
