NIHR’s Committee on Detention & Facilities Visitation convenes its 18th Meeting via Videoconference

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Detention & Facilities Visitation has convened its 18th teleconference meeting, under the chairpersonship of Dr. Malallah Alhammadi and membership of Mr. Khaled Alshaer,
Dr. Fawzeya Alsaleh and Mrs. Deena Alladhi.

The Committee opened its meeting by discussing the follow-up visit conducted by the Committee to Foreign Male Shelter and Deportation Centre in the Southern Region (Alba), during which it continued the follow-up of the conditions of the foreigners covered by the Royal Pardon issued by His Majesty the King of the State, and who have finished their sentence period, followed-up with their embassies and consulates to facilitate the procedures of their deportation to their countries and examined the precautionary measures taken by the Centre to combat the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) and to what extent they comply with the instructions and directives issued by the competent bodies and authorities to prevent the spread of the virus.  It was clear that the Centre is adhering to such instructions and directives to maintain the health of all staff and inmates and is avoiding overcrowding taking into account its current capacity, where some members of the existing communities expressed their complete satisfaction with the level of treatment by the staff as well as the quality of the food and various services provided to them.

The Committee also reviewed the report of its visit to the housing of the workers of ASRY (Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard Company), which aimed at examining the conditions of the rights of expatriate workers and ensuring their access to their rights guaranteed under the provisions of the Constitution and the relevant international and regional conventions.

The Committee examined the request submitted by the Chairperson of the NIHR to consider the allegations by an inmate on the living conditions at the Centre, and concluded by taking appropriate measures to contact the officials in the said Centre to examine the validity of such allegations and complete the procedures of the complaint raised to the Committee.

 

The Committee concluded its meeting by approving plans for its scheduled visits to correction and rehabilitation centres as well as public and private hospitals and health and social shelter and care centres during the last quarter of this year.  It also discussed all its previous resolutions and recommendations and the actions taken thereupon.
