Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights holds its 11th Regular Meeting

The NIHR's Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural held its 11th regular meeting at the headquarters of the NIHR in the Seef District under the chairpersonship of Mr. Fareed Ghazi, and the membership of Dr. A. Rahman Jawahery and Dr. Al-Sammak
The meeting reviewed the visions of the Secretary General with respect to the Committee's proposal on amending some provisions of Law No. (47) for the year 2006 on the Care, Rehabilitation and Employment of the Disabled, which was related primarily to modifying the text of the second paragraph of Article 21 of the same law, increasing the punishment for the perpetrator of an act of negligence leading to the death of a disabled person. The Secretary General was requested to carry out further study in this regard by the Committee.
It is worth mentioning that the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural rights is one of the standing specific committees in the NIHR which entrusted with giving opinions on issues related to economic, social and cultural rights, evaluating the extent of the tangible progress in the exercise of these rights in the Kingdom and following-up on relevant public issues and media programs. The Committee is also tasked with studying the economic conditions in the Kingdom in terms of the level of income and prices, evaluating curricula and presenting feedback on their development in accordance with international standards. The Committee's mandate also involves monitoring the implementation of international conventions and treaties relating thereto, including the recommendation to accede to regional and international conventions on economic, social and cultural rights, and reviewing of the reservations entered by the Kingdom on some of the texts of the conventions the Kingdom had already acceded to.
This is in addition to studying the legislations in force in the Kingdom and laws relating to economic, social and cultural rights, with the aim of developing them to ensure the citizen's economic, social and cultural levels are improved, as well as giving its opinions regarding their conformity with international human rights standards, recommending new legislations related to human rights and contributing to drafting parallel reports the kingdom pledged to present periodically.
