The Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights Convenes its 18th Regular Meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights held its 18th regular meeting under the chairpersonship of Mr. Farid Ghazi. The meeting was held at the NIHR’s headquarters in the Seef District and was attended by Committee Members Dr. Abdulrahman Jawaheri and Dr. Jameela Al-Sammak.
In a continuation of the efforts of the Committee to enhance and protect the social rights, the Committee reviewed a proposal of Law to establish a public prosecution on environmental issues as well as court departments on environmental violations and offenses and requested for Secretariat-General’s opinion to be reviewed at the next Committee’s meeting.
Meanwhile, the Committee discussed a proposal to hold a number of events on economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to a healthy environment and its relevant rights, as well as mechanisms of action, all the way to the support and development of community environmental culture as well as facing challenges surrounding this right. It assigned the Secretariat-General to develop a comprehensive vision on such events to be reviewed at the next Committee’s meeting.
It is worth mentioning that the Committee on Economic Rights is one of NIHR’s standing specific committees concerned with giving opinion on issues related to economic, social and cultural human rights, monitoring public opinion issues and relevant information programs, studying economic conditions in the Kingdom in terms of income and price level, evaluating educational curricula and showing feedback on their development pursuant to international standards, following-up the application of relevant international conventions and treaties, and reviewing the Kingdom’s reservations entered on some provisions of conventions acceded to by the Kingdom.
