NIHR Organises a Round Table on "The Reality and Challenges of the Elderly in the Kingdom of Bahrain"
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has organised a round table for a number of representatives of civil society institutions on “The Reality and Challenges of the Elderly in the Kingdom of Bahrain” to discuss national issues and legislation related to the rights of the elderly, and to provide the opportunity to exchange opinions and proposals, especially with regard to enhancing community awareness of the rights of the elderly, with the participation of representatives of Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning and Social Insurance Organisation.
During the event, which was moderated by Mr. Khalid Al-Sha'er, NIHR Vice-President, the importance of amending legislation and laws supporting this important segment of society was highlighted, in a way that is consistent with international obligations in this field, and the necessity of establishing broad partnerships with various entities and diverse sectors in Bahraini society.
The participants also discussed the role of official authorities in activating laws related to the elderly, and the importance of continuing cooperation with national institutions and bodies, in addition to relevant civil society institutions, in order to benefit from their capabilities and expertise in bridging the various gaps, contribute to strengthening the role of these institutions in the Kingdom, and come up with practical recommendations that contribute to developing legislation and improving the procedures followed at the same level.
At the conclusion of the event, the participants reached results and recommendations aimed at strengthening and activating community partnership with ministries, government agencies and civil society institutions with regard to developing health services for the elderly, increasing awareness and education about the rights of this group of society, making the necessary amendments to develop national legislation related to the elderly, and providing all types of support necessary for them to facilitate their lives in various fields.
