NIHR organized the First Annual Forum for Bahraini Children under the title "You Have the Right... You Have a Voice"

The event was organized by the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in collaboration with the British Embassy in Bahrain. Distinguished guests included His Excellency Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Education, and members of the Parliament and Shura Council, along with officials and representatives from local and international child-focused organizations.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma stressed Bahrain's dedication to integrating human rights within its institutional frameworks, reflecting these principles within the constitution, and developing laws and legislation to safeguard citizens' rights, including those concerning education and children.

Eng. Ali Ahmad Alderazi, NIHR’s Chairperson, thanked all participants and supporters, highlighting the significance of the forum amidst Bahrain's remarkable progress in human rights. He emphasized the vital role of the Child Rights Commissioner in focusing on children's issues and enhancing their best interests through supportive policies and legislation. He also called for collaborative efforts to advance this cause.

The British Ambassador to Bahrain, His Excellency Mr. Alastair Long, commented on the strong partnership between the UK and Bahrain in advancing children's rights and underscored the forum as a crucial platform for children to voice their opinions and influence decisions affecting their lives. He praised the efforts of all organizing parties and reiterated his ongoing support for such beneficial initiatives.

In a recorded message, Professor Ann Skelton, Chairperson of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, welcomed the participants and explained that the committee she leads works globally to protect and promote children's rights by overseeing the implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, monitoring state compliance with the convention, and providing recommendations to improve children's conditions.

Professor Skelton commended the efforts made by the Kingdom of Bahrain in this regard, particularly in the field of juvenile justice and the appointment of a Commissioner for Child Rights, wishing success for the forum and all participants.

Dr. Houriya Aldairy, Child Rights Commissioner, unveiled the 2024-2025 action plan focusing on children's rights, stemming from the broader 2022-2025 strategy of the National Institution. She emphasized education and awareness as key to safeguarding child rights and the importance of partnerships across various sectors to activate this strategy effectively.

Ms. Paula Jack, reflecting on the thirty-fifth anniversary of the Rights of the Child Convention, noted the progress and challenges in Bahrain, highlighting improvements in legal, educational, and healthcare systems for children's protection.

Ms. Kaula Yasuma, in her address, spoke on the Child Rights Commissioner's role in fulfilling the Institution's strategy to protect and enhance children's rights, urging the youth's active participation.

The forum featured over 200 participants, including a presentation from Abdul Rahman Kanoo International School students on Child Rights Day, emphasizing the need for a supportive environment for children.

Discussions at the forum included the goals, priorities, and future outlook of the Child Rights Commissioner's action plan, a generational dialogue on child rights, and performances by children about their rights, introducing the Friends of the Commissioner team and volunteer expert group.

This forum marks a significant step toward boosting Bahrain's efforts in developing child-focused programs and initiatives, enhancing children's awareness of their rights, enabling them to express their views, and fostering an active societal role.
