In activation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) and the Office of the Inspector-General of the National Intelligence Agency, a training program was launched on human rights remotely for the NIA’s memebers via Zoom platform.  The program’s first lecture focused on
“Fair Trial Guarantees”.  It was presented by Chief Public Prosecutor, Nawaf Abdulaziz Al-Awadhi, and included a number of themes, i.e. definition and standards of fair trial and sources and guarantees of international standards for fair trial, especially with regard to pre-trial guarantees and guarantees during trial.

On this occasion, Mr. Mohamed bin Rashid Al-Rumaihi, the National Intelligence Agency Inspector-General, expressed his appreciation for the efforts made for the success of the training program for NIA employees for the third year in a row, especially as the training program has taken a different character this year, namely the adoption of audiovisual communication system in compliance with the preventive measures approved by the National Coordinating Committee for Combating Coronavirus (Covid-19), in order to boost the continuity of the courses and encourage the main pillar on which the program is based.

For her part, Ms. Khoury, Chairperson of the NIHR, explained that the human rights training program for NIA employees includes three educational lectures that extend from August to October 2020, which focus on fair trial guarantees in addition to the Penal Code and Alternative Measures and guarantees for the convicted during the sentence execution.  Ms. Khoury stated that the NIHR’s training to NIA employees falls within the NIHR’s strategy and action plan to train law enforcement officials affiliated to the security agencies, noting that such continuous cooperation between national human rights mechanisms stems from the full belief of such bodies in the importance of spreading awareness of human rights principles as well as the importance of exchanging expertise and promoting effective community partnership in this area.
