NIHR Council of Commissioners Meet an Expert from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights
Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the National institution for Human Rights (NIHR), has met with Mr. Mohamed Abu Harthiya, expert in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) Department of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, at the NIHR headquarters in the Seef district, in the presence of Mrs. Hala Ramzy, member of the NIHR Council of Commissioners, and Chancellor Yasser Ghanim Shaheen, NIHR Secretary-General.
During the meeting, Eng. Al-Derazi welcomed Mr. Abu Harthiya, reviewing the NIHR’s role in spreading, promoting and protecting human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, and its constant quest for development to enhance its human rights mission in society. The two sides discussed the NIHR’s role in following up on the recommendations of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), having it 4th phase scheduled to start next November, where the Kingdom of Bahrain will be the first country to be reviewed through this mechanism, which began in 2008. They also discussed ways to enhance coordination and cooperation between the NIHR and the High Commissioner, in order to support efforts of the NIHR in protecting and promoting human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
For his part, Mr. Abu Harthiya valued the NIHR’s efforts in implementing its terms of reference set forth in its Establishment Law, and its parallel report on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), which supports the work of the Working Group of the Human Rights Council, calling for the NIHR’s active participation during the next UPR session.
