NIHR Conducts an Announced Visit to the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre in Jaw Region
Following allegations reported to the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) by a non-government organisation abroad that a group of inmates in the Correction and Rehabilitation Centre in Jaw region were subjected to ill-treatment and denied visits or contact with their families, a number of members of the NIHR Council of Commissioners conducted a declared visit to the aforesaid Centre, where a representative of the group of inmates was interviewed, in complete isolation, in order to find out the validity of the allegation raised, and the extent to which they enjoy their rights in accordance with the UN Standard Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, where all remarks made by the group representative have been recorded.
During the visit, the NIHR delegation met with those in charge of the Centre, who explained that the rights of the inmates of the Centre are guaranteed by virtue of the laws, regulations and systems in-force in the correction and rehabilitation centres and the relevant international human rights standards. The NIHR delegation also reviewed the documents related to the visits and the security cameras to verify the procedures followed by them with regard to the conditions of those inmates, their living conditions and the services provided to them.
Based upon the NIHR supervisory and human rights role, a report on the visit will be prepared to include all observations and appropriate recommendations thereon, which will be submitted to the competent authorities.
