NIHR Participates in the Agenda of the GANHRI 14th Conference in Denmark
The National institution for Human Rights (NIHR), represented by Mrs. Rawdha Al-Aradi and Mr. Ahmed Al-Saloom, members of the NIHR Council of Commissioners, has participated in the agenda of the 14th conference of the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, for three consecutive days, which was organised in cooperation between the GANHRI, Danish Institute for Human Rights, Commissioner of Human Rights in the Ukrainian Parliament, and Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, under the theme " Combating Torture and Other Forms of Ill-Treatment: The Role of National Human Rights Institutions".
The conference aimed to address issues related to torture and other forms of ill-treatment in a comprehensive and precise manner, by providing opportunities for national human rights institutions to work side by side with partners and stakeholders to exchange expertise, identify good practices, and reaffirm the importance of their individual and collective commitments as a basic pillar in the field of human rights at the international and national levels regarding the right of persons not to be subjected to torture and other forms of ill-treatment under International Law.
On the sidelines of its participation in the conference, the NIHR delegation met with representatives of the Danish National Human Rights Committee, and discussed aspects of cooperation between them.
It is worth noting that the GANHRI works closely with a wide range of partners, particularly the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations Development Programme, to support and strengthen national institutions around the world and enhance their efforts on key human rights issues. The annual meeting of the GANHRI is an annual global gathering, in which more than 100 national institutions from the four regional networks participate: the Asia-Pacific Forum (APD), the African Institution, the European Institution, and the Americas institution. This year’s meeting coincides with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the GANHRI and 30 years of the Universal Declaration of the Principles of Human Rights (UDPHR).
