NIHR Participates in the 27th Annual Meeting of Asia-Pacific Forum
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has participated in the 27th annual meeting of Asia-Pacific Forum (APF), which was held for two consecutive days by videoconference, in Sydney, Australia, with the participation of 25 national institutions from the regional group. The participants reviewed the APF performance report, monitoring data and APF performance appraisal aiming to meeting the outcomes of the strategic plan, submitted a report on the strategy on gender equality and approved the audited financial accounts report for the year ending on 30 June 2021.
During the meeting, the membership of some national human rights institutions was reaccredited, and was suspended for others, and members of the APF Governance Committee were elected.
A report was also presented on the activities GANHRI for the past year, and then the nomination of several national institutions to occupy two positions in the GANHRI’s office was approved, to represent the APF for two years as of March 2023. Those nominations will be submitted for final approval by the Global Alliance for National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) in the annual meeting, which is scheduled to be held next year.
On the sidelines of the meeting, an event entitled “International Human Rights in a Healthy and Sustainable Environment: The Role of National Human Rights Institutions” was organised, where D. Ian Fry, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in the Context of Climate Change, gave a speech on the impact of climate change on human rights. A number of national human rights institutions also gave presentations on the impact of climate change in their countries on the human rights situation.
