NIHR organizes an Event on “Bahrain’s Achievements in the Field of Human Rights on the Occasion of the International Human Rights Day”

On the occasion of the International Human Rights Day, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) organized an event on “Bahrain’s Achievements in the Field of Human Rights” by videoconference, to highlight the Kingdom of Bahrain’s excellence in dealing with the Coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis, the national efforts to support the advancement of women Bahrain, the values of peace, tolerance and openness embodied by the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the role of the Kingdom of Bahrain 2017 Declaration in rejecting hate speech.

The event was opened by Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the NIHR, stressing the view expressed by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, that the “NIHR is a house of expertise and advice, founded for the sake of everyone and the homeland, to ensure that all citizens and residents exercise their rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and the Law”, stating at the same time the importance of concerting all efforts to strive towards establishing, protecting and promoting human rights in order to achieve the goal for which the NIHR was established, and to make the culture of human rights a lifestyle for all.

During the event moderated by her, Ms. Khoury explained that the aim of organizing this event is to translate the principles and values ​​contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights into initiatives for development and construction that preserve human dignity and security, and to promote development policies and practices and the permanent values ​​of equality, justice and human dignity to ensure the achievement the aspiration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, through concerted efforts and achieving more cooperation and coordination between all partners, including national and international bodies concerned with human rights, to enable human-beings to exercise and enjoy their rights without any discrimination.

During the first theme of the event, Dr. Waleed Al Manea, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, spoke about the excellence of the Kingdom of Bahrain through the efficient national efforts and sense of responsibility in dealing with the Coronavirus (Covid-19) crisis, in which he touched on the wise political leadership in management, coordination and cooperation between the Coronavirus leadership and the competent bodies, mechanisms for the control of the pandemic, capacity building, treatments and vaccine development and sustainability of basic health services.

During the second theme of the event, Ezz El-Din Khalil Al-Moayyed, Advisor for General Secretariat Affairs at the Supreme Council for Women, spoke about the national efforts in the field of sustainable progress of the Bahraini women.

During the third and last theme of the event, Dr. Majeed Al-Asfour, a member to the Board of Trustees of King Hamad Centre for Peaceful Coexistence, reviewed the values of peace and tolerance in the Kingdom of Bahrain 2017 Declaration and his role in rejecting the hate speech.

At the conclusion of the event, Ms. Khoury expressed thanks and gratitude for the relentless efforts and tireless work of all parties that contributed to building an integrated system based on respect for human-beings and their public rights and freedoms.  She added, “We all work hand in hand to build the edifice of the homeland, to elevate its construction, institutions and fields and highlight its features through its successes, so that the nation's flag remains shiny in various fields of civil, political, economic, social and cultural life”.

This event falls within the framework of the NIHR’s strategy and action plan and its specializations in the field of promoting and disseminating a culture of human rights by holding lectures and training and educational courses for all segments of society on topics related to human rights.  It was held with the participation of representatives of the relevant ministries, bodies and institutions, as well as a number of civil society organizations, in addition to the Chairperson and members of the NIHR’s Council of Commissioners.
