NIHR starts applying Alternative Sanctions and Measures System
The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has begun to apply the alternative sanctions and measures system to a number of convicts whose freedom deprivation sanctions have been replaced by alternative ones that vary between community service and enrollment in rehabilitation and damage correction programs instead of imprisonment in order to complete the remaining period of their original sentences.
On this occasion, Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the NIHR, explained that alternative sanctions are based on the rehabilitation of the convicts in order to integrate them into society, and work on humanizing the punishment and spreading the spirit of love, tolerance, responsibility and community partnership among all members of the same family in society, which are goals in harmony with human rights.
Ms. Khoury stated that the NIHR’s participation within the relevant authorities in implementing the alternative sanctions system falls within the framework of the NIHR strategy and action plan to contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, as well as its belief in the importance of alternative sanctions and measures, which is a pioneering experience in the region aimed at promoting human rights and contributing positively to the consolidation of family relations that enhance the stability of society.
Ms. Khoury called on all beneficiaries of this opportunity, whether families or sentenced, to interact positively and cooperate with the competent authorities to achieve the essential purpose of the alternative sanction, calling on at the same time the various private sectors and civil society institutions to seek to accept those who subject to alternative sanctions and measures to effectively contribute to their success and expansion.
