On the occasion of the Arab Human Rights Day, the Arab countries, including the Kingdom of Bahrain, celebrate this day on March 16th of each year, in commemoration of the entry into force of the Arab Charter on Human Rights in 2008, after its adoption in 2004 at the Tunis Summit as an Arab regional mechanism regulating joint efforts among the countries of the region in the field of realization, enforcement and protection of human rights.

This year’s theme is “The Right to a Safe Environment with the Challenges of Climate Change”, since the environment and its protection are important issues at the national and international levels, given the fact that they are one of the basic requirements of human rights, as they are linked with the right to life and health.

On this occasion, Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), pointed out the effective role of the Kingdom of Bahrain in its support and care for the right to a healthy and sound environment, especially with the challenges of climate change, explaining that Bahrain has paid special attention to addressing environmental issues, and has adopted development initiatives and programmes consistent with the Sustainable Development Goals in accordance with an advanced national strategy for the protection of the environment, in addition to the appropriate legislative measures and actions taken by it to reduce pollution of various sources, as well as its ratification of many regional and international conventions, treaties and protocols concerned with protecting the environment and achieving sustainable development, stating the continuation of those efforts so as to preserve the right of future generations to achieve global environmental security.

Al-Derazi stated that the NIHR is working to follow up and monitor the extent of adherence to international and regional treaties and conventions on human rights, especially the Arab Charter on Human Rights, calling for continued cooperation and joint action on human rights issues raised at local, regional and international levels in order to promote and protect human rights in general, and the human right to a sustainable sound and healthy environment in particular to contribute to the achievement of the 13th Sustainable Development Goal on “Climate Action".
