Statement by the Chairperson of NIHR on the Occasion of International Democracy Day

On International Democracy Day, Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi expressed NIHR’s deep appreciation for His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa's dedicated efforts towards fostering democracy through a comprehensive reform initiative that has laid the foundations for a state governed by institutions and the rule of law.

Alderazi highlighted the considerable efforts of the Bahraini government, led by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, in promoting awareness and cultivating a culture of democracy and human rights to ensure sustainable development across all sectors. He underscored that the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain, the National Action Charter, and relevant national legislation collectively provide a solid legal framework that supports the development of an inclusive, wise democratic society where laws are applied universally and without discrimination.

Marking International Democracy Day, which this year focuses on "Ensuring effective governance of artificial intelligence at all levels," Alderazi reiterated NIHR's commitment to overseeing adherence to international conventions and treaties ratified by Bahrain aimed at bolstering democratic principles. He emphasized the critical need to unite efforts to safeguard society from the potential threats posed by artificial intelligence, which include the spread of misinformation that could adversely affect democracy and peace. He stressed the importance of strengthening both local and international cooperation to build trust and protect present and future generations from these emerging challenges.
