19 May 2024

In line with the mandate of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in the areas of protection and promotion, and the authority granted by its establishing law, Dr. Houria Abbas Hassan, Child Rights Commissioner, conducted an announced field visit to a government school in the Northern Governorate. This visit was prompted by reports on social media regarding an incident where a student assaulted another student.

During her visit, Dr. Hassan met with the assaulted student to assess his physical and psychological condition and identify his needs. She also engaged with the school administration to review the administrative and legal measures taken in response to the incident. Representatives from the Ministry of Education and the General Secretariat of the NIHR were also present.

Dr. Hassan emphasized her commitment to collaborating with relevant officials at the Ministry of Education to support the child’s environmental policy and enhance safety and security measures in schools to prevent such incidents from occurring again, ensuring the best interests of the child are upheld.

The NIHR can be reached through the toll-free hotline (80001144), via the NIHR Bahrain mobile application, through the website: www.nihr.org.bh, or by visiting the institution's headquarters in person.
