NIHR Organises an International Conference on “Alternative Sanctions and Measures”
Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), revealed that in light of the progress witnessed by the Kingdom of Bahrain in the field of human rights in general, and its interest in expanding the scope of alternative sanctions in particular, which are a qualitative leap in the development and strengthening of the human rights system, as they contribute to enhancing society and family stability, and consolidating the humanitarian and human rights approach in applying correction and rehabilitation systems for the convicts, the NIHR is organising an international conference under the theme “The Law on Alternative Sanctions and Measures: A Qualitative Experience in Criminal Legislation”, with an extensive local, regional and international participation in the field of human rights.
Al-Derazi said, “The NIHR, being a national mechanism concerned with the protection of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, has taken upon itself, since its establishment, to implement the provisions of various legislation and its amendments in this regard, as it has organised a lot of training and educational events to enhance awareness of all members of the society of their rights stipulated in the Constitution and the relevant laws. The organisation of this international conference is an affirmation of the NIHR’s role and keenness to contribute to educating the society, to demonstrate the great development in the justice system in the Kingdom of Bahrain in the promotion and protection of human rights in general and the rights of persons with restricted freedoms in particular, and to highlight the method of implementing the Law on Alternative Sanctions and Measures, the agencies concerned with its enforcement, the role of supporting bodies in activating the law, and the nature of the works assigned to convicts and pretrial detainees, in light of Bahrain’s efforts in developing criminal justice”.
He added, “The conference will commence at the end of this month and will last for two consecutive days. The first day will witness two sessions that sill discuss the Law on Alternative Sanctions and Measures, and efforts of various bodies in this field, as well as the role of national human rights institutions in the follow-up and implementation of the Law on Alternative Sanctions and Measures. The second day will include three sessions to discuss challenges facing the authorities supervising the enforcement of the law and those sentenced in its enforcement, the views of civil society institutions in the enforcement of the Law on
Alternative Sanctions and Measures and the most essential challenges facing its enforcement, and finally an open public discussion with the proposals and concluding recommendations of the conference”.
