NIHR Council of Commissioners is adopting a Programme of Field Visits to Correction and Rehabilitation Centres in Ashura

Under the chairpersonship of Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, the Council of Commissioners of the National institution for Human Rights (NIHR) has held a coordination meeting on the upcoming field visits to correction and rehabilitation centres and detention places during Ashura 2022, to determine the extent to which inmates are enjoying the freedom to practice their religious rites in a comfortable manner and in a way that does not harm or infringe the freedom and privacy of other inmates of all other religions and sects.

During the meeting, the NIHR Council of Commissioners has adopted an integrated program in preparation for the visits over several days, and emphasized the importance of highlighting the importance of ensuring the continuation of all inmates’ practice of their religious rites, in line with international standards related to protecting the rights of inmates and ensuring their enjoyment of all basic rights, especially the right to practice religious rites, with an emphasis on observing the rules and regulations of correction and rehabilitation centres.

The members of the NIHR Council of stated affirmed that, based on the human rights and oversight role of the NIHR within its broad powers confirmed by its Establishment Law, and in a framework of transparency and clarity to protect and consolidate human rights, a special report will be issued on the field visits that the members of the NIHR Council of Commissioners will carry out during Ashura this year, stating the procedures and services carried out by the management of the centres in relation to the inmates' practice of their religious rites.
