Chairperson of the NIHR meets Special Assistant to the High Commissioner for Human Rights

01 Jul 2017

At the end of his visit to the Swiss city of Geneva, a delegation of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), headed by Mr. Saeed bin Mohamed Al-Faihani, met Mr. Mohamed Nesour, Special Assistant to the High Commissioner for Human Rights and Director of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Division at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, in his office in Geneva.  They discussed NIHR’s desire to obtain training programs for the members of the Board of Commissioners and the staff of NIHR’s General Secretariat, which aim to raise the capacities and increase expertise in various fields related to NIHR’s work and its terms of reference mentioned in its Establishment law.

With regard to the severing of diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar by the Kingdom of Bahrain and a number of Gulf and Arab countries, the NIHR’s Chairperson denied the allegations of violation of a number of fundamental human rights, which have been raised by the State of Qatar, explaining that His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, may God protect him, has issued a royal order to take into account the humanitarian cases of Bahraini-Qatari joint families, if any, in recognition of the brotherly Qatari people, whereby the Interior Ministry has allocated a special phone number to receive such cases and take appropriate measures to facilitate their affairs, with the aim to preserve the fabric of the Gulf family.

The Chairperson of the NIHR stressed that the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) in the Kingdom of Bahrain, through its human rights position and being part of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), is working closely to monitor the situation in order to ensure non-infringement of the fundamental rights of citizens, noting that no individual or family has submitted any complaints to the NIHR related to the consequences of severing the diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar.

He added that we should focus on the main reasons that called on the Kingdom of Bahrain and other countries to sever the diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar and work to find out durable and practical solutions and not to waste the time to create new problems and issues that are unrelated to reality.
