The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) and the British University (BU) of Bahrain have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on coordinating cooperation in order to develop the educational level of male and female students through training programs and provide them with legal and human rights skills necessary to prepare them to enter the labor market and respond to its requirements in order to achieve the goal of contributing to the service of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

On the sidelines of signing the MoU, Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the NIHR, explained the importance of this type of MoUs in contributing to the dissemination of a culture of human rights in the academic context, stating that the promotion and dissemination of a culture of human rights falls within the goals of the NIHR as per its Law of Establishment.

For his part, the president of the British University of Bahrain, Professor Keith Sharp, stated that he was pleased to cooperate with the NIHR. He added that the human rights course is mandatory in all undergraduate programs, and that it is an area that they intend to contribute to research it and develop its policies through the British University Human Rights Centre.

The MoU aims to consolidate bonds of coordination and joint cooperation regarding the consolidation, promotion, encouragement, dissemination and development of human rights. The cooperation also includes exchange of visits, legal and human rights consultations, publications, literature and specialized studies, in addition to arranging and organizing workshops in the area of human rights.

The MoU also included supporting aspects of mutual interest and holding training courses in the legal and human rights area, in line with programs and projects of the National Plan to consolidate and spread a culture of human rights in a way that serves the supreme national interest of the Kingdom of Bahrain
