NIHR receives a Delegation from the US Congress

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) received at its headquarters in the Seef district a delegation from the US Congress that is currently visiting the country to learn about the Kingdom of Bahrain and its achievements in various fields, in the chairperson of Mr. Abdullah Ahmed Al-Derazi, NIHR’s Vice chairperson, Ms. Maria Khouri, Head of the NIHR’s Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and Dr. Khalifa bin Ali Al-Fadel, NIHR’s Acting Secretary General.

At the beginning of the meeting, NIHR’s Vice Chairperson welcomed the US delegation, praising the good relations between the two friendly countries.  He briefed the delegation on the NIHR’s Establishment Law as well as its objectives and action strategy, referring to the field visits performed by it to prisons and labor gatherings to inspect their conditions, identify their problems and work to resolve them.

NIHR’s Vice Chairperson also briefed the delegation on the human rights situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the role adopted by the NIHR in handling it in accordance with NIHR’s terms of reference.

For her part, Ms. Maria Khouri spoke about the NIHR’s standing committees as well as their mechanism of action and efforts to follow-up the human rights issues with the various concerned governmental and non-governmental bodies, in addition to the advisory opinions received by them from the Council of Representatives and the Shura Council, which the committees study and make appropriate recommendations thereupon.

Dr. Khalifa Al-Fadel, NIHR’s Acting Secretary-General, highlighted NIHR’s achievements in the human rights area, pointing out that the Kingdom of Bahrain enjoys a great deal of freedoms and respect for the principles of human rights, thanks to the great support by HH King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, King of Bahrain, may Allah protect him, for human rights institutions, including the NIHR.

For their part, the American delegation expressed their thanks for the hospitality and good reception and valued the efforts made by the NIHR in the human rights area as well as its efforts to carry out its social responsibilities in a large and distinctive manner.

The program of the visit by the Us Congress delegation included a tour in the corridors of the NIHR’s building, where they were briefed on the training center, the NIHR’s library and the NIHR’s complaints receiving office.
