NIHR’s Chairperson meets with Amnesty International
A delegation of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), headed by His Excellency Mr. Saeed Bin Mohammed Al-Faihani, held a meeting with Mr. James Lynch, Deputy Director of Amnesty International’s International Affairs Division, on the sidelines of the current visit by the delegation to London.
At the beginning of the meeting, the NIHR’s Chairperson presented an overview of the NIHR and its role in promoting and protecting human rights, which serves the action of the human rights system of the Kingdom of Bahrain, referring to the amendments to its Establishment Law in order to be compatible with the international standards, especially the Paris Principles that organize the action of the national human rights institutions around the world, granting the NIHR wide and open powers that enhance its role and responsibility in reality.
Regarding the repeated Qatari allegations of “siege and collective punishment”, the NIHR’s Chairperson stressed that the humanitarian cases of the joint families (Bahraini and Qatari) were not affected by the severing of diplomatic relations with the State of Qatar and that these allegations and claims are baseless. He also stated that the Kingdom of Bahrain has allocated a special phone number to provide assistance in this regard and take appropriate actions thereof, and that the NIHR’s doors are always open to receive any complaint, stressing at the same time that the NIHR has not received any complaint from any Bahraini or resident family as a result of the severing of diplomatic relations with Qatar.
The NIHR’s Chairperson also stressed that the diplomatic crisis with the State of Qatar was the result of Qatar’s destabilization of security and stability in a number of sister countries as well as its continued support for activities that would spread chaos in the region and its non-compliance with the Riyadh Agreement 2014.
