During the meeting, the outcomes of the visit, which lasted for several days, were reviewed to determine the extent to which the prisoners enjoy the freedom to practice their religious rites in line with international standards related to protecting the rights of prisoners and ensuring their enjoyment of all basic rights. The Council discussed the draft visit report, which included a number of themes, most notably details about meeting officials and prisoners at the centers, the procedures and services in place to enable the prisoners to practice their religious rites, in addition to the final recommendations of the visit. The Council also affirmed that the prisoners’ enjoyment of their prescribed rights, and that they are not subjected to any form of ill-treatment come at the top of the NIHR's priorities, as confirmed by the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.
The Council of Commissioners also made it clear that the report will be delivered to the authority concerned following approval by members of the Council, and will then be posted on the NIHR’s website, within a framework of transparency, responsibility and credibility pursued by the NIHR to present the human rights situation in Bahrain in places of detention.
In the same context, Al-Derazi said: “The efforts and organizational measures undertaken by the Correction and Rehabilitation Centers Department to enable inmates to practice their religious rites with ease during Ashura, like those from members of society, in a manner that does not harm or infringe on the freedom and privacy of other inmates of all religions and sects, despite the circumstances imposed by the Corona pandemic, is appreciated by everyone," calling on the Ministry of Interior to continue the effective cooperation between the two sides to achieve our common goals.
