25 Jun 2017

A delegation of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) headed by His Excellency Mr. Saeed Bin Mohammed Al-Faihani, continued their meetings during their current visit to London, where the NIHR’s Chairperson met with Mr. Neil Bush, Director of the Arabian Peninsula Department at the British Foreign Office, stressing the depth of bilateral relations between the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Kingdom as well as the joint commitment of the two countries to intensify efforts to combat terrorism and protect and enhance human rights.

The NIHR’s Chairperson explained the establishment of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) and its role in the promotion and protection of human rights in the Kingdom of Bahrain, as well as the new terms of reference that have been added to it under the recent amendments to its Establishment Law, which expanded its powers and gave it the right to conduct visits to prisons, either declared or non-declared, and enabled it to practice its competencies in a professional manner in accordance with the Paris Principles, which are governing the action of the national human rights institutions around the world.

The two sides discussed the Qatari allegations of human rights violations, where the NIHR’s Chairperson noted that the media misinformation to the public opinion, conducted by the State of Qatar through the National Committee, is not commensurate with the national institutions’ behavior and professionalism in the human rights area, stressing that human rights have been considered humanely by the severing countries to the State of Qatar.

For his part, Mr. Neil Bush, Director of the Arabian Peninsula Department at the British Foreign Office, praised the role played by the NIHR and expressed his readiness to provide possible means of support in order to enable the NIHR to advance its duties.
