NIHR, represented by Mr. Khalid Abdulaziz Al – Shaer, Vice Chairperson of the institution, took part in an international conference titled "Food Justice from a Human Rights Perspective: Addressing Real Challenges and Future Prospects." This conference was hosted in the Qatari capital, Doha, over two consecutive days and was organized by the National Human Rights Committee in Qatar in collaboration with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the global alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, the UNDP office, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the League of Arab States.

The primary objective of the conference was to establish a global platform for dialogue to exchange knowledge and experiences, enhance capacities, review legislative frameworks, policies, plans, and programs pertaining to food justice from a human rights perspective. Additionally, it aimed to develop frameworks and establish foundations for those engaged in the fields of food justice and human rights.

At the conclusion of the international conference, participants affirmed the existence of numerous human rights instruments and mechanisms designed to uphold the right to food. However, they also acknowledged a significant disparity between the implementation of these instruments and the ongoing challenges of food insecurity, malnutrition, hunger, and famine worldwide.

The conference attendees issued several recommendations, urging national human rights institutions to monitor and report on the enforcement of the right to food within their respective countries. This includes monitoring the effects of climate change, economic crises, conflicts, and sanctions on food rights. Furthermore, they called upon the United Nations to enhance cooperation and coordination at global, regional, and national levels to amplify efforts in supporting states to fulfill their obligations for progressively realizing the right to food for all. Additionally, there was a call for heightened awareness regarding the right to food.
