NIHR receives Board of Directors of Bahrain Women Union
Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), welcomed the cooperation with all women civil society institutions in order to empower Bahraini women, build their capabilities and potentials, support the achievement of their aspirations and meet their needs, through joint action to raise awareness of the importance of women's participation in these institutions to improve the conditions of Bahraini women.
This was during her reception of the members of Bahrain Women Union’s Board of Directors headed by Mrs. Badria Al-Marzouq, and in the presence of a number of the female members of the NIHR’s Council of Commissioners, where she praised the efforts of the Union to support Bahraini women on a permanent basis, stressing at the same time the NIHR's support for the efforts made by the Union to achieve common goals.
Both sides discussed Article (353) of Bahrain Penal Code and Nationality Law, which stipulates that a rapist shall be exempted from punishment in the event of his marriage to the victim, and the local and international positions that demand its abolition or amendment to be consistent with preserving dignity and human rights and achieving justice for all.
