28 Mar 2019

Ms. Maria Khoury, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), stated that religious freedoms are not limited to the existence of places of worship or to the practice of religious rites and rituals, but also include the right to obtain all the rights guaranteed by the two international covenants, which are guaranteed by the Constitution without any discrimination, referring to Bahrain’s shining record in the field of religious freedoms.

This came during her meeting with a delegation from the American Commission for International Religious Freedoms, on the occasion of their current visit to the Kingdom of Bahrain, where she welcomed them and presented an overview of the human rights situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain and the role of the NIHR in dealing with it.  She stressed that the NIHR, through its monitoring of the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including religious freedom, has not observed any targeting of any particular religious sect or community based on religion of belief.

Ms. Khoury also stressed the readiness of the NIHR to cooperate with all international institutions and bodies in order to ascertain any information related to religious freedoms in Bahrain, being independent of the executive authority and accredited by the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI) complying with the Paris Principles.
