Al-Dirazi: NIHR Welcomes Continued Expansion in the Application of the Alternative Sanctions and Measures Law and the Start of the Implementation of the Open Prisons Programme
Eng. Ali Ahmed Al-Derazi, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), expressed the NIHR’s gratefulness for the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to continue expanding the application of the Alternative Sanctions and Measures Law, in parallel with the start of the implementation of the open prisons program, stating that this expansion of the application of the provisions of the Alternative Sanctions and Measures Law and the flexibility in implementing the open prisons program are in line with international standards and protocols contained in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights with regard to the humane treatment of persons deprived of their liberty and the respect for human dignity.
Al-Derazi pointed out the Ministry of Interior’s great role in implementing alternative sanctions and the open prisons program, which will contribute to the integration of the convicts who will benefit from them, and will prevent them from reiterating crime, which will strengthen the human rights system in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Al-Derazi stated the NIHR’s full support for everything that would contribute to the success and expansion of this experience to achieve its essential purpose by positively integrating convicts into society and benefiting from their energies without prejudice to the public interest, since it is a pioneering experience in the region that aims at promoting human rights, which will significantly contribute to the consolidation and protection of family ties and the enhancement of societal stability in general.
