The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), represented by Ms. Rawda Al Aradi and Mr. Ahmed Al Saloum, member of the Council of Commissioners, participated in one of the sessions of the Human Rights Council in its 56th session currently held at the Palace of Nations in Geneva. This session was dedicated to the commemoration of the International Day for Women in Diplomatic Work, which falls on June 24th each year.

During the session, it was discussed that women have been involved in diplomatic work for centuries, yet their contributions have often been overlooked. Since women and girls represent half of the world's population, they accordingly represent half of its potential. Women make substantial and positive contributions to diplomatic work. Research has shown that women's work in ministries and parliamentary councils allows them to enact laws and introduce better policies to the public, the environment, and social cohesion. Their representation in legislative bodies enhances the effectiveness of good governance and ensures a wide range of perspectives and experiences are considered in decision-making processes.

The session also clarified that violence against women in politics still represents a significant issue that impedes progress towards gender equality and fosters a hostile environment that prevents women from entering politics or expressing their opinions, ultimately weakening their ability to fully contribute to society.

At the end of the session, it was emphasized that women have played a crucial role in the United Nations since the drafting and signing of the UN Charter in 1945. The UN General Assembly, the largest annual meeting of world leaders, has been the stage for many historic moments in achieving gender equality. However, there is still much to achieve regarding women's representation and participation.
