Statement from the Chairperson of NIHR on World Environment Day

05 Jun 2024

On World Environment Day, celebrated annually on June 5th, Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, the Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), highlighted the Kingdom of Bahrain's commitment to launching initiatives and implementing national projects in the fields of environment, climate, and development. These efforts are in line with the esteemed directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and are directly overseen by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the King's personal representative and Chairman of the Supreme Council for the Environment, ensuring alignment with Bahrain’s obligations to international environmental and wildlife protection treaties.

Alderazi noted that this year's theme chosen by the United Nations, "Combat Desertification, Land Restoration, and Building Drought Resilience" aims to bring attention to the escalating environmental challenges affecting ecosystems globally—from forests and deserts to farmlands and lakes.

Furthermore, Alderazi emphasized the critical need to prevent the random destruction of natural vegetation to maintain ecological health and continuity. Reasons include safeguarding ecological balance, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting biodiversity. He advocated for unified efforts from government bodies, private sector entities, and civil society to engage actively in environmental conservation through campaigns and local initiatives such as tree planting and adopting sustainable practices.
