Statement from the Chairperson of NIHR Regarding the Adoption of Amendments to the Reform and Rehabilitation Institution Law
Eng. Ali Ahmed Alderazi, Chairperson of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), stated that Decision No. (49) for the year 2024, issued by His Excellency the Minister of Interior, Lieutenant General Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, aims to amend certain provisions in the executive regulations of the Reform and Rehabilitation Institution Law. This decision represents a significant step towards enhancing and respecting human rights within reform and rehabilitation centers by ensuring the provision of comprehensive and free medical care to inmates and pre-trial detainees, reflecting a commitment to improving living conditions within these institutions.
Alderazi explained that the decision would strengthen family ties and support the social integration of inmates by allowing visits from up to six relatives and friends, and provides opportunities for children under the age of twelve to visit under certain circumstances. He also noted that the decision includes providing special food based on the recommendations of a nutrition specialist for those who require specific dietary care, thus ensuring that the individual health needs of inmates are met in accordance with international standards and instruments.
In concluding his statement, Alderazi expressed NIHR’s full support for any measures that enhance the rights of inmates in reform and rehabilitation centers and ensure the creation of a reformative environment that respects their human rights and dignity.
